The James E. West Fellowship Award
This Award is a national recognition for individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or securities to the Greater Los Angeles Area Council endowment fund.
This contribution is in addition to, and does not diminish or replace, the donor’s annual gift to the Council’s annual giving program. Organizations or individuals may contribute an award in honor of someone – a recent Eagle Scout, a Silver Beaver recipient, outstanding unit leader, District volunteer, family member, or in memory of a loved one. By honoring someone through a gift to the Council’s endowment fund, you will ensure that Scouting in LA will continue for years to come. Each donor is recognized with a personalized certificate, distinctive pin and an embroidered square knot which you may wear on your uniform.
There are several levels which are achieved with an accumulated level of giving to the James E. West Fellowship.
James E. West Fellowship Member:
- Bronze- $1,000+
- Silver- $5,000+
- Gold- $10,000+
- Diamond – $15,000+
About James E. West
James Edward West (1876–1948) was a lawyer and an advocate of children’s rights, who became the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), serving from 1911 to 1943. Upon his retirement, West was given the title of Chief Scout.
Among his accomplishments, West created the first edition of The Official Handbook for Boys, expanded the Scout Oath, negotiated the purchase of Boys’ Life, and secured the federal charter in 1916.
In 1993, the BSA created the James E. West Fellowship Award for individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or securities to their local council endowment fund.
