Welcome to Approved Cub Camping!
Cub Scout camping is one of the best ways to deliver the promise of Scouting to your families. A pack overnighter builds friendships, introduces Scouts and parents to the outdoors together, and helps Cub Scouts complete outdoor adventures — all at an age-appropriate, introductory level.
Because Cub Scout camping is meant to be introductory, campouts should take place a relatively short distance from your pack’s meeting place, at a location familiar to the leaders running the event, and with the skill level of every participant in mind. The Guide to Safe Scouting limits Cub Scout camping to locations designated by the local council. The map below shows every location currently approved for Cub Scout overnight camping within Greater Los Angeles Scouting.

Before You Camp: Requirements for Every Pack Overnighter
- Approved location. Cub Scout overnight camping may only take place at a site approved by Greater Los Angeles Scouting (shown on the map above). Districts and units are not authorized to approve their own campsites.
- BALOO-trained leadership. At least one registered adult leader trained in Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) must oversee the planning and be in attendance for the entire campout. Find upcoming BALOO courses at my.scouting.org or on the council training calendar.
- Length. Pack overnighters may last up to one night.
- Two-deep leadership and Youth Protection. All of Scouting America’s Safe Guarding Youth policies apply at every campout.
- Webelos and Arrow of Light dens may conduct den-coordinated campouts under the same requirements, including BALOO-trained leadership in attendance.
- Age- and skill-appropriate program. Plan activities that every Scout and family member attending can participate in safely.
What Kinds of Locations Are Approved?
The Greater Los Angeles Scouting Camping Department and Camping Committee approves locations in the following categories:
- GLAS council camps and properties — including Cushman Watt Scout Center, Firestone Scout Reservation, Hubert Eaton Scout Reservation, and Camp Trask.
- State, county, and regional parks within the council’s service area that have been appraised and approved by the Camping Department.
- Established program partners — museums, ships, sports facilities, and similar venues offering structured overnight programs that have been reviewed and approved.
Every approved location has been evaluated using Scouting America’s Pack Overnight Campout Site Appraisal Form, which covers site safety, sanitation, drinking water, emergency medical access, and more. Site approvals are valid for two years and are periodically re-reviewed by the Camping Department and Camping Committee.
Want to Camp Somewhere Not on the Map? Submit a Location for Approval
We’re always looking to grow the list of great places for our packs to camp. If your pack has found a facility that isn’t currently approved, you can request a site appraisal.
How to submit a location:
- Check the map first. Make sure the site isn’t already approved.
- Submit your request here: https://247scouting.com/forms/033-cubscoutcamprequest Please submit at least 60–90 days before your planned campout.
- Review and decision. The Camping Department reviews each submission and aims to respond within [30] days of receiving a request. Approved sites are added to the map for all packs in the council to enjoy. Submitting parties will be notified once the request is complete.
Please note: units and districts cannot approve their own sites, and units may not conduct their own appraisals. All approvals must come through the council Camping Department.
A Note on Approvals
Approval of a location is based on general site requirements and does not represent an endorsement of the facility. Listed sites are generally acceptable for pack camping, but every pack should evaluate each facility in light of the needs, abilities, and skill levels of its own participants before planning a campout there.
